In November 2010, the American College of Cardiology Foundation/American Heart Association Task Force issued new guidelines for assessment of cardiovascular risk in asymptomatic adults. In their clinical practice recommendations, carotid ultrasound with IMT measurement and plaque assessment was ranked superior to many other tests that are widely (and perhaps inappropriately) used.
